Is the Spark still the best drone under $500?

The DJI Spark is still the best beginner drone you can buy

The DJI Spark has been the best drone under $500 for quite some time now. At its new reduced price of $399, the Spark is officially the beginner drone for most people. There really haven’t been many other options for people who want a good aerial photography drone on a budget. That’s changing now, with some smaller players moving into the affordable consumer drone space. Let’s take a closer look at the best drones under $500.

Hubsan Zino – A Mavic Air at the price of a Spark?

hubsan zino

Hubsan will soon launch the Hubsan Zino, a $399 folding drone with a 4K camera. Hubsan is marketing the Zino as a competitor to the Mavic Pro. A better comparison is probably the Mavic Air ($799), the ultra-portable 4K drone from DJI. The price of the Zino is far less than the Mavic Air, it is identical to the price of the DJI Spark ($399). This is good news for consumers, as there are very few good entry-level drones under $500. By the specs, the Zino compares favorably to the Spark in a few areas. Is the Zino the new leading drone under $500? Let’s take a look.

Review: The DJI Spark mini-drone packs a punch

DroneDJ Review: The DJI Spark mini-drone packs a punch

The first time I got the DJI Spark in my hands was back in June. Since then I have flown the Spark mini-drone on numerous occasions, at many different locations, and in varying conditions. To say that I like the Mavic Pro’s smaller brother is an understatement.

I simply love the Spark. Yes, I wish it had 4K video, a real 3-axis gimbal, and a longer flight time. But the way the Spark flies when you put it in sports mode (fast and agile) and the fun that you can have with it, make up for its shortcomings. As they say, the best drone you have is the one that is with you. The Spark has joined me on many trips, where I simply would not have bothered to take the bigger and heavier Mavic Pro. As you probably can tell, the DJI Spark is one of my favorite drones!

With that out of the way, I owe you a full review of the DJI Spark mini-drone, so here we go.

DJI shows Spark with sideways moving gimbal in Happy Holidays video

Very early in November, DJI published a video on YouTube called: “DJI – Happy Holidays From Spark“. Most of the viewers on YouTube seemed to appreciate the Season’s Greetings from DJI, although some said it may have been a little early. One commenter noticed that around the 0:06 mark the video clip showed the camera and gimbal on the Spark moving from left to right (yaw), which is sort of interesting because the camera on the Spark does not, in fact, move sideways at all. It is a 2-axis mechanical gimbal that only allows for pitch and roll movements. All other camera movements involve de drone moving as a whole. This is where the Spark differs from, for instance, the Phantom 4 Pro and Mavic Pro drones, that do feature 3-axis gimbals.

DJI launches the Spark Portable Charging Station

This is perfect timing on DJI’s part as I was about to buy either this super small case from PolarPro or the Doubi carrying case for my DJI Spark. Those plans have been canceled as I just placed an order for this new travel charger from DJI, the Spark Portable Charging Station. It is a little bulkier and heavier, but it has a built-in battery that allows you to charge up to one DJI Spark and two additional batteries. It is priced at $89 and available as of today.

DJI Spark and Mavic Pro drones show impressive flying ability in illegal and dangerous test next to airport

This Greek guy on YouTube has been showcasing both his own ignorance of any Greek flight safety measures and regulations as well as the impressive flying ability of the DJI Mavic Pro and Spark drones. In his latest video, he claims to set an altitude record of 8,200 feet with his DJI Mavic Pro drone, right next to the Milos Island National Airport(!).
