One of the biggest hurdles for drone expansion in America is simple: seeing where they are in the sky. That’s especially true as drones begin flying farther, longer, and beyond the pilot’s direct line of sight. Now, SiFly Aviation says it has taken a meaningful step toward solving that problem through a new partnership with ADS-B Exchange.

Kiwi drone enthusiast Bruce Simpson has come up with a new device capable of scanning for ADS-B signals from manned aircraft allowing for safer drone flights. Simpson showed off the device on his YouTube channel with many viewers showing interest in it.

The DJI Mavic Air 2 launched with DJI’s brand new AirSense safety technology and a maximum transmission range of 10km—if you are in the United States. Mavic Air 2’s around the world will be missing AirSense and have 4km shaved off the maximum transmission distance.
On Wednesday, May 22nd, DJI held an event in Washington DC to outline DJI’s actions and suggestions to improve the safety in the air for all participants, both manned and unmanned. DJI’s Vice President of Policy & Legal Affairs, Brendan Schulman announced that DJI will install ADS-B receivers in all DJI drones over 250 grams starting on 1/1/2020. As a reference, the DJI Spark weighs 300 grams. This will be the single largest ADS-B deployment in the world as the number of drones in the air is much larger than the number of airplanes and helicopters combined. The introduction of ADS-B for DJI drones and other safety improvements were explained in a presentation titled ‘Elevating Safety: Protecting the Skies in the Drone Era.‘
At today’s event, DJI introduced the new DJI Knowledge Quiz and the DJI Aeroscope Program. Both of these initiatives are great steps towards a safer shared (manned and unmanned aircrafts) airspace. We are especially impressed with Aeroscope, but why stop there?
What else could be done to further improve the safety of people on the ground as well as in the air? Well, DJI could upgrade their geofencing and introduce ADS-B Interactive. And they did.
