Skydio’s obstacle avoidance and self-flying capability explained

Skydio's obstacle avoidance and self-flying capability explained

If you have never experienced Skydio’s obstacle avoidance and self-flying capability, you’re in for a treat. The first time I hand-launched the original Skydio R1, I was blown away. The drone took off from my hand, flew about five feet away from me at a slightly higher elevation, turned around, “looked” at me, and simply followed my every move. It seemed eerily easy and natural for the unmanned aircraft to do so. This was with the R1, mind you, not the smaller, lighter, and much, much smarter Skydio 2 that launched earlier today. Let’s take a closer look at how the Skydio 2 drone is able to fly autonomously.

Remote controller would turn Skydio 2 into DJI Mavic 2 Pro competitor

Maybe Skydio does it on purpose. Maybe not. Either way, the marketing team that releases the teaser videos for the new Skydio 2 drone always put a little easter egg in there somewhere. The first video showed the shade of the drone, which revealed to us that there will not be a metal band or casing around the entire drone as was the case with the Skydio R1. The latest video shows somebody who presumingly is flying the drone and he seems to be holding a remote controller for the Skydio 2 drone. More control over the unmanned aircraft with a dedicated remote controller might just turn the Skydio 2 into a true DJI Mavic 2 Pro competitor.

Looking to work in the drone industry? Check with Skydio

Are you looking to work in the drone industry, but maybe not as a commercial drone pilot? Well, check with Skydio. As you probably know, Skydio made its name in the drone world when they launched the autonomous Skydio R1 drone in early 2018. The California-based drone maker is about to launch the successor to the R1, which for now goes by the name Skydio 2, and they could use some extra hands. A quick look at their website shows that they have at least eleven open positions.

New ‘frameless’ design for Skydio 2 drone shown in video

New 'frameless' design for Skydio 2 drone shown in video

Apart from the amazing autonomous flying ability, one of the standout features of the Skydio R1 drone was the frame around the propellers and body of the unmanned aircraft. A few of our readers had pointed out that the shadow of the new Skydio drone in the video that the drone startup recently released shows us the new “frameless” design of the Skydio 2.

The world’s first glimpse from Skydio 2 [video]

The world’s first glimpse from Skydio 2 [video]

The makers of the amazing R1 drone are getting ready for the launch of their successor drone. Today, Skydio shared with us the first footage from the Skydio 2. We’re expecting this new drone to be smaller, lighter, less expensive, and better than the original Skydio R1. The video shows us three short clips. The first one is some FPV-style action footage of the drone following a motorcyclist riding through a forest. The second part is a more revealing cinematic shot of a man running into the ocean. The last shot is of a mountain biker, but this time the drone flies in front of the subject, keeping her in the frame, while avoiding trees and bushes. The first and last sequence especially seem to show off the incredible obstacle-avoidance Skydio is getting ready to bring to market with their Skydio 2 drone that will be launched later this year. We don’t know if Skydio 2 will be the official name of the new autonomously flying unmanned aircraft. Stay tuned.

Skydio teases R1 drone successor coming this fall, could it be a DJI Mavic 2 Pro competitor?

Skydio teases successor R1 drone coming this fall. Possible DJI Mavic 2 Pro competitor?

Yesterday we reported that DJI is rumored to bring back the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 in mid-October. Today we’ve learned that Skydio will also bring a new drone to market around the same time. A successor to the Skydio R1 drone that we think might compete directly with the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Let’s take a closer look at what we think Skydio might have in store for us and if it might indeed compete with the DJI Mavic 2 Pro.

Skydio adds new features to their R1 drone – Flying over water, Hyperlapse…

Skydio adds more new features to their R1 drone

Today, Skydio announces more new features for their fully autonomous R1 drone. As the company keeps improving their software, they are now adding the ability for the R1 to fly over large bodies of water. Previously you were restricted to flying over smaller ponds or streams. Not anymore. Skydio suggests that you can now use the R1 to obtain footage of yourself wakeboarding, fishing or even when you’re out on a jetski. That sounds really cool, but keep in mind this is one expensive drone to see going down in the drink. Another new feature that was added in the latest release is a Hyperlapse mode and improved Car Follow shots. Check out the video below to get an idea of the kind of footage you can now get with the SKydio R1 drone. You can get the Skydio R1 on Amazon for $1,999.

Skydio R1 Black Friday: Free backpack and battery – $278 value

Skydio R1 Black Friday promotion: Free backpack and battery - $278 value

For this year’s Skydio R1 Black Friday promotion, the company offers you a free second battery ($149) and a custom Skydio backpack ($129) when you purchase the R1 drone. No discount on the $1,999 drone itself, unfortunately. Still, a very nice promotion, because the fully autonomous drone doesn’t easily fit into most regular backpacks as we learned ourselves. Also, the extra battery comes in nicely as the flight time is a mere 16 minutes, due to all the processing taking place onboard this aircraft. The Skydio R1 Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotion for the R1 drone will run from Friday through Monday.

Hover 2 is more than an upgrade, it’s competition for DJI

The Hover Passport Camera received a lot of attention when it was first released in 2016. The drone was safe and easy to use. The Passport’s camera was better than most selfie drones. The Hover Passport ($300) was designed to appeal to customers who might be intimidated by standard drones that have complicated remote controllers and exposed propellers. The new Hover 2 stays close to its roots, with a foldable user-friendly design. The foldable design is where the similarities seem to end. Hidden beneath the black shell of the ZeroZero Hover 2 is a killer drone with upgraded features and some fantastic innovations. I suspect that competitors like DJI, Parrot, and Skydio are starting to worry.

Big day at Skydio! Software update for R1 drone adds Car Follow Feature and more

Software update for Skydio R1 drone adds Car Follow Feature and more

Skydio released their fully autonomous flying R1 drone earlier this year and their unmanned aircraft has surprised may drone enthusiasts. The way the R1 drone is able to avoid obstacles while following you is simply unreal. I had the chance to try it out a number of times now and it truly is impressive. Today, Skydio releases their first major software update for the R1. They have added the ability for the drone to follow vehicles, which I think is a very valuable addition for when you want to show off your adventures. Of course, keep in mind that this is not meant for the public roads! Skydio also added four new cinematic modes and improved the ‘lead’ mode, landing and general user experience of the app. The company promises to keep improving their Autonomy Engine with future updates.

How the autonomous Skydio R1 drone views the world as it is following you

This video was just uploaded to YouTube and it shows you how the Skydio R1 drone views the world as it is following you completely autonomously. This is called the “Voxel view” and it is the view that the R1 drone creates with help of the 12 obstacle avoidance cameras and the one main 4K camera primarily meant to track the subject.

Skydio R1 drone follows snowboarder through trees and shows off its amazing obstacle avoidance and subject tracking capabilities

The drone industry is buzzing with talk of the amazing obstacle avoidance and tracking capability of the new Skydio R1 drone. The video that the company used to show off the drone’s skills is great but another video surfaced from the marketing manager of Skydio, Pat Stahl. Pat took the R1 with him on a snowboarding trip and I think this video does an even better job of showing how well the obstacle avoidance and tracking work on this autonomously flying drone. Just watch how the drone follows Pat when he snowboards through the trees.

Skydio launches R1 – an autonomous flying drone that takes obstacle avoidance to new heights

The Skydio R1 drone has been years in the making but it is here now! Our sister site, Electrek, first wrote about it when one of the senior engineers left Tesla to join the then start-up drone company.

What makes the R1 drone unlike any other drone you’ve seen, is its advanced obstacle avoidance system, the Skydio Autonomy Engine. With 12 cameras, the R1 creates a 3D map of its surroundings and tries to predict the movements of its subject, i.e. a skier, runner, biker, up to 4 seconds into the future so that it can follow the subject while keeping it in the center of the frame and avoiding obstacles at the same time. Impossible you say? Wait until you watch the video below. This is obstacle avoidance at a whole new level. Sorry guys, but the bar has been raised with the R1 drone from Skydio.
