DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise

The newly introduced but out of stock DJI Smart Controller gets its first firmware update. Earlier this week, during CES 2019, DJI released the new DJI Smart Controller for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, Zoom, and Enterprise drones. Interestingly enough the controller is still listed as out of stock on DJI’s website. And as of yet, we have not even seen this new product filed with the FCC, although the partial government shutdown might have something to do with that. On top of that, there are persistent rumors that the Chinese drone maker is working around the clock to assemble all the necessary components for this new controller. Leaving us wondering when we may be able to actually buy this exciting new device. However, none of this stopped DJI from releasing the first firmware upgrade for the DJI Smart Controller.

This morning DJI released their new DJI Smart Controller during CES 2019. Right after the official announcement at 9 am EST, the first reviews showed up on YouTube. At $649 the new DJI Smart Controller is not cheap by any means but the brighter screen will be very useful for many drone pilots. The price goes down to $400 when bought in combination with the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom or Pro drone.

Contrary to earlier reports, it seems that DJI is planning to launch the DJI ‘Pro’ Remote Controller at CES 2019. However, instead of calling it Pro, DJI has changed the name to DJI Smart Controller. Early this morning the promotional video of the DJI Smart Controller was released on YouTube. The video provides us with all the most important information about the new device.

Today these photos surfaced on Facebook. It is what seems to be a custom-made DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with a FLIR Boson thermal camera attached to it. One of the cameras apparently is the Boson 320 6,3 mm combined with the original optical zoom camera, according to the post on social media. For details and pricing, see here.

Last week, the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual was launched without much fanfare. No show. No special event. Just a simple press release for a drone that may, in fact, be one of the most important drones that DJI has launched recently. We know that drones have helped to save more than the 124 people DJI reported earlier. To have drone equipped with a thermal camera for less than $3,000 means that there really is no excuse for any fire department, police force, and first responders not to add this drone to their toolbox. DJI was supposed to announce the thermal camera for the Mavic 2 Enterprise last Monday. However, that never happened. We had asked DJI for an explanation. Unfortunately, no official answer was provided. Instead, DJI Enterprise sent a mysterious tweet that the announcement might be delayed until after the Holidays. We have been informed by one of our trusted sources, that the thermal camera for the Mavic 2 Enterprise, that was to be announced today, will be announced at CES 2019 instead. There is no explanation provided for the delay, but it seems that DJI has thought at the last moment that it might be better to launch the thermal camera for the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise, at the Consumer (!) Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month, together with the new ‘Pro’ Remote Controller with built-in display for the Mavic 2. DJI Enterprise sent out a tweet today announcing the introduction of something new on December 17th, at 9 am EST. The accompanying image shows what seems to be a hot cup of coffee, taken with a thermal or infrared camera. There is also a bit of a cryptic message saying: “It’s going to be ” Will it be a thermal camera for the Mavic 2 Enterprise?

Who is the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise for? That is a good question. With a zoom camera, secure onboard data storage and cold weather ability, the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise offers clear advantages to inspection and insurance companies. However, when you look at the drone’s accessories, such as the loudspeaker, dual floodlights and LED beacon, DJI obviously targets first responders, lifeguards, search-and-rescue, emergency personnel, firefighters and local law enforcement officials. For almost two thousand dollars they get a heck of drone to help them in their work. The DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise is the first affordable search-and-rescue drone.

This week will be all about the DJI Airworks 2018 event in Dallas, TX. The event officially starts tomorrow, but DJI had invited DroneDJ to be present during today’s launch of their DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise drone. As DroneDJ readers will know, this drone was widely anticipated with several photos that were leaked in recent months. Next week DJI’s annual commercial drone event, DJI Airworks will take place in Dallas, TX. Many of us are expecting the Chinese drone maker to launch the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition, which was recently confirmed in these FCC filings, at the event. Earlier this summer we already saw some high-resolution images of the drone as well as a few leaked images with different devices mounted on top of the drone. Now DJI Enterprise tweeted this mysterious announcement “For the Frontiers” with an October 30th date. The announcement says “It’s time for our ‘biggest’ unveil of the year” and includes an image that shows the outline of what almost seems to be a pair of binoculars. It seems safe to say the DJI will be announcing the new Mavic 2 Enterprise later this month. The remaining question is, of course, what is that thing mounted on top? Let’s take a closer look.
