If your drone videos aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough

If your drone videos aren't good enough, you're not close enough

Robert Capa famously said that: “If your photographs aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.” It seems that the same holds true for drone photography and videography. Check out this video that was shared on Facebook a few days ago. It shows a huge Marlin fighting for its freedom and the action is being captured by a DJI Phantom drone. The drone pilot flies the aircraft so close to the action that the footage is simply spectacular.

New UK drone rules to improve aviation safety come into effect today

New UK drone rules to improve aviation safety come into effect today

Drone incidents have been on the rise for the last three years in the UK, ultimately resulting in new drone rules coming into effect today. The new UK laws will prohibit drone from being flown over 400 feet and within one kilometer (0.62 miles) of official airport boundaries. Other new rules, that would prohibit kids from flying drones weighing more than 250 grams without an adult, are still being worked on and may come into effect later. The new rules aim to improve aviation safety in the UK.

DroneRise – DJI Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition

DroneDJ DroneRise

Good morning, last weekend has been all about DJI. First, we had the Argos catalog that came out with photos and specs of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom foldable drones. Apparently, it had been printed before DJI’s “See the Bigger Picture” event was postponed. However, the weekend wasn’t over yet. Yesterday, we found out about a photo of the Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition being posted on the official DJI website in Germany. Talking about the world’s leading drone manufacturer having a rough weekend…

New photo of the Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition surfaces on German DJI website

The “See the Bigger Picture” event from DJI has been postponed but more and more photos are making their way to the public domain. Today, we received a tweet from one of our readers in Germany, who spotted a photo of the new DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition on the German DJI website. The photo seems to be erroneously uploaded to the site as a thumbnail of a DJI Mavic Air video. The new photo provides us with a more detailed view of the entire unmanned aircraft as well as the bottom side of the highly anticipated foldable drone from the Chinese drone maker.

Breaking News: DJI Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom already listed in UK Argos catalog

Breaking News: DJI Mavic 2 listed in UK Argos catalog

Breaking News: Just now, we were notified by one of our readers that the new DJI Mavic 2 is already listed in the latest Argos catalog with photo and details. The Chinese drone maker will be launching two version of the popular foldable drone: the DJI Mavic 2 Pro with a 1-inch sensor and the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with a 24-48mm zoom lens and ‘Dolly Zoom’ effect similar to the Parrot Anafi. The new DJI Mavic 2 was originally planned to be launched during a special event “See the Bigger Picture” in NYC on July 18th, but that was postponed for reasons that are still unclear to us. The fact that DJI’s latest foldable drone now appears in the catalog of an English retailer must indicate that the official launch cannot be far off. Update 7/29/18: see also the new photo of the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition

DroneRise - Real estate drone photography, Ocusync vs Lightbridge, DJI Enterprise Shield and more...

Good morning, here are yesterday’s headlines with 5 tips for real estate drone photography, DJI Ocusync versus DJI Lightbridge, drone swarms for marines, DJI Enterprise Shield and a DJI Mavic Pro capturing a daredevil skiing down the K2 mountain. Lastly, we have a video from a commercial drone operator who is being confronted, some people might say ‘harassed’, by a concerned resident.

DJI Mavic Pro captures first person to ever ski down the K2 mountain summit

DJI Mavic Pro captures first person to ever ski down the K2 mountain summit

Last week, we had two posts involving the brothers Andrzej and Bartek Bargiel. First Bartek was able to play a key role with his DJI Mavic Pro in the rescue of Rick Allen from Broad Peak. You can read the interview with him here. Then we had that amazing drone photo taken at 27,600 feet of the K2 mountain. Well, today the brothers are back! This time Bartek uses his DJI Mavic Pro to capture these amazing shots of his brother skiing down the K2 mountain. For those of you who don’t know, K2 is the second highest mountain in the world at 28,251 feet high and one of the, if not the, most deadly mountains, also known as the Savage Mountain. Flying a drone to capture your brother skiing down that mountain is simply unreal. You have to watch this one!

DJI Mavic Air survives being submerged during test with water landing gear [video]

DJI Mavic Air survives being submerged during test with water landing gear [video]

Check out this video from Dustin Dunhill in which he tests the RCGeek water landing gear for the DJI Mavic Air. The set consists out of four leg extenders and four foam balls that will allow the drone to land on water in case you run out of battery. During Dustin’s test, it is actually pretty windy and you can clearly see how the four foam balls negatively affect the Mavic Air stability during flight. The water landing gear obviously makes the foldable drone a lot less aerodynamic.

Good morning, here are the headlines you may have missed. We have news from the FAA, reinforcing their authority over the national airspace in a statement. However, State and Local authorities can still determine take-off and landing areas for drones. And thermal drone footage from National Geographic that shows the Nkuhuma Pride of lions hunting at night in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Lastly, we have news on increased drone use along the U.S. / Mexico border.

To clear up any misunderstanding there may be around Local and Federal drone regulations, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a statement explaining exactly where things stand. State and Local authorities may determine the take-off and landing areas for drones but only the FAA has the authority to control the National Airspace.

A thermal drone shows the Nkuhuma Pride of lions hunt at night in Kruger National Park

Just this morning we came across this amazing video from Safari Live (National Geographic) that shows the Nkuhuma Pride of lions hunt at night in Kruger National Park in South Africa. The lions are being followed by one person (James Henry) in an open 4×4 and by a thermal drone. Watching the thermal drone footage provides a stunning view of the pride’s movement through the thick South African bush. At some point, you can actually see another smaller animal run away from the approaching pride.

DroneRise – No word yet from DJI, Dronamics, 2 suspects caught by drone and dog

DroneRise - No word yet from DJI, Dronamics, 2 suspects caught by drone and dog

Good morning and happy Monday! Hopefully, you’ve had a great weekend? We still have no word from DJI on when the “See the Bigger Picture” event might be taking place. If the Chinese drone maker will give the press and media a 3-weeks heads up before the event takes place (like they have done in the past), we will be looking at the second half of August at the earliest. As far as other new is concerned we have a story about how two suspects were caught in a cornfield with the help of a drone and a K-9 unit as well as news of a Bulgarian drone capable of flying 1,550 miles while carrying 800 pounds. So, grab your coffee and jump right in.

Intel celebrates 50th anniversary with a record-breaking 2,018 Shooting Star drone light show

To celebrate their 50th anniversary Intel lit up the skies over their Folsom, California facility with a record-breaking 2,018 Shooting Star drones. This is not the first time we have seen Intel put up drones shows. They have done it before at locations such as the Bellagio in Las Vegas, CES, Coachella, PrideJohannesburg and most famously the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, breaking records along the way. More recently, Intel has been getting competition from Ehang, that held the previous record with a display of 1,374 drones.
