Take drone racing to the next level with the DJI Digital FPV Ecosystem

DJI Digital FPV Ecosystem

Here’s DJI’s official press release of their new DJI Digital FPV Ecosystem. We had a chance to see it for ourselves yesterday at the Seaview Rotary Wings RC Helicopter Club, and also spoke with Ferdinand Wolf, creative director of DJI Europe, about this new system and the implications for drone racing. One of the things he pointed out is that currently, it is very hard for the audience of a larger drone racing event to follow the action from onboard one of the competing drones. The analog FPV footage quality is simply not good enough for people in the audience to see what is happening and where the competition is. DJI Digital FPV Transmission System could change that. The HD signal from the racing drones can be shared, i.e., displayed on a large screen or viewed from a pair of goggles. You may still experience a bit of motion sickness when viewing the fast-paced action of an FPV racing drone, but the video quality is so much better that most people will have no problem understanding what they’re seeing. We at DroneDJ are very excited about this new technology that DJI is bringing to the market today. There’s only one question left to answer: Where is the DJI FPV drone? More on that later today.

Drones keep workers safe from dangerous work

Drones keep workers safe from dangerous work

Last Friday, Bloomberg published an excellent article explaining how drones keep workers safe from dangerous work. In 2017 alone, 166 U.S. workers died in confined spaces and a staggering 887 were killed by falls. Many of these jobs can be done by drones and robots and thus keep workers away from dangerous situations. Robots and drones can safely go into confined spaces or fly up to dangerous heights to perform inspections that previously had to be done manually. Even though the number of commercial drones exploded to 277,000 in 2018, there are nowhere near enough of the unnamed aircraft to cover all the dangerous jobs in the country.

If you have been thinking about making money with your DJI Phantom 4 Pro well this course will teach you how, and how to do it well. I had the pleasure of flying with drone mapping expert Paul Aitken and his team of DroneU instructors last year at the NTSB facility in Ashburn, VA and we had a blast. The DroneU instructors are thorough, knowledgeable, and share a wealth of hands-on experience with the students. It is a course I can highly recommend.

Public safety drone programs must expect intense scrutiny

Public safety drone programs must expect intense scrutiny

Managing an unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) program can be a challenging endeavor. There are a myriad of regulations, technical challenges, and operational issues that every program manager must contend with. But managing a public safety UAS program can be even more daunting – especially in communities where privacy is paramount and distrust of “big brother” lingers in the air.

Drone helps ground crews put out spot fire in Chalkyitsik Complex

Romeo Durscher, DJI’s Director of Public Safety Integration, shared a short video on Facebook that shows how a drone helped ground crews put out a spot fire in the Chalkyitsik Complex, Alaska. The aerial view that an unmanned aircraft provides, helps firefighters locate a small fire in dense vegetation. Small fires like these can be hard to spot from the ground and that is when drones can come to the rescue.

Parrot exits consumer toy drone business

Life style shot of the ANAFI Thermal drone

Parrot is exiting the toy drone business behind. French drone maker Parrot announced two years ago that it would shift away from toy drones and focus on higher-end and commercial drone solutions instead. Since the announcement, the company has laid off about half of its employees working in the UAV department. Recently we reported that they will start developing drones for the U.S. Army. And this week we learn that they are leaving the toy drone business behind altogether.

Update: Parrot is NOT exiting consumer drones, only the toy drones business. This article has been updated to reflect that. Also, see this message from Parrot here.
